Flexible films of vermiculite have been prepared from aqueous suspensions after swelling by cation exchange and mechanical delamination. Two different swelling cations, lithium and butylammonium, have been investigated. The degree of swelling and delamination during the suspension preparation was characterized by the percentage of water reabsorbed by dried clays and the adsorption of methylene blue. The vermiculite saturated with lithium ions is more easily delaminated but contains more water than those saturated with butylammonium. Good quality coherent flexible films could be prepared from both the lithium and butylammonium exchanged vermiculites but the high percentage of water found in the films has a detrimental effect on their dielectric properties. To reduce the amount of water in the exchanged vermiculites a second ion exchange with potassium, a less hydratable cation, was investigated. Films prepared after exchange with potassium showed significant improvements in their dielectric properties, with a dielectric constant ∈ around 10 and a dissipation factor tan δ around 0.06 at 25 °C and a frequency of 1 kHz.

In2O3–SnO2 films were produced by thermal decomposition of a deposit which was dip coated on borosilicate glass substrates from an acetylacetone solution of indium and tin acetoacetonate. Thermal analysis showed complete pyrolysis of the organics by 400 °C. The thermal decomposition reaction generated acetylacetone gas and was found to be first order with an activation energy of 13.6 Kcal/mole. Differences in thermal decomposition between the film and bulk materials were noted. As measured by differential scanning calorimetry using a 40 °C/min temperature ramp, the glass transition temperature of the deposited oxide film was found to be ∼462 °C, and the film crystallization temperature was found to be ∼518 °C. For film fabrication, thermal decomposition of the films was performed at 500 °C in air for 1 h followed by reduction for various times at 500 °C in a reducing atmosphere. Crystalline films resulted for these conditions. A resistivity of ∼1.01 × 10−3 Ω · cm, at 8 wt. % tin oxide with a transparency of ∼95% at 400 nm, has been achieved for a 273 nm thick film.

A fine white α-Si3N4 powder has been produced by the thermal decomposition of the coprecipitation product of the reaction between SiC14 and NH3. The Cl content, due to a reaction between Si(NH)2 and the NH4Cl by-product during the thermal treatment of the coprecipitate, has been reduced by using an isothermal step at ≈ 250°C in the heat treatment cycle.

This article discusses the fundamentals required to produce narrow size distribution fine ceramic powders, make suspensions of fine ceramic powders, and make green bodies with a uniform packing of these particles. In all cases, the interface that fine ceramic powders present to their environment is a very important parameter in controlling the properties of the powders during processing.
There are two major classifications for ceramics: structural and functional. The former includes high and low temperature applications. High temperature ceramics are needed for kiln furniture, ladles, catalyst substrates, and insulations. Low temperature uses are represented by the traditional white ware, as well as hardness applications, such as coatings, armor, and cutting tools. Electrical functions include superconductivity, dielectrics, piezoelectrics, and varistors; magnetic functions are represented by ferrite magnets and SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices); and optical functions include optical and infrared windows, as well as radar windows. Each class of ceramics has different processing problems and, therefore, different research and development directions. The major areas of research advances for structural and functional ceramics are described below.

The discovery of high critical temperature superconducting oxides 1,2 has stimulated intensive research activities aimed not only at understanding the physical mechanisms of superconductivity, but also developing techniques to produce these ceramics in useful forms. A promising application for superconductors is in electronic components industry which has given rise to an interest in the various ways of producing thin films of superconducting materials.

In the early 1980s Prof. Bowen at Massachusetts Institute of Technology advanced the concept that sintered ceramic bodies could be improved by decreasing the defects in green bodies. In addition, his group advanced the idea that ideal green bodies should be composed of monodisperse particles packed into an ordered array. They used the hydrolysis of metal alkoxides to produce narrow size distribution sol-gel powders (i.e., amorphous). These powders were allowed to settle under the force of gravity into an ordered array which was dried and sintered. Sintering took place at much lower temperatures and at faster rates than traditional ceramic processing (e.g., broad size distributions of crystalline powders). Improvements in strength and toughness of the sintered body were never demonstrated by Bowen's group for these novel ceramics.
Ordered particles have packing faults which lead to ordered domains, as shown in Figure 1, similar to grains in polycrystalline materials. When sintered, the ordered domains shrink separately and pull away from each other as shown in Figure 2. This leads to defects in the sintered body of sizes similar to those of the ordered domains which can encompass as many as 10,000 particles. These ordered domains lead to weakness in the sintered body according to Griffith's theory.
